Themes for cooperation

ERA-NET TRANSPORT develops and supports research programming on a wide number of areas within the field of transport (research) policy. These areas and themes for cooperation, which include all transport modes are identified by two different approaches:

  1. The pro-active approach
  2. The responsive approach

In the pro-active approach ERA-NET TRANSPORT envisages to stimulate research programme cooperation and coordination on specific themes. In 2004 a Road Map for Trans-national Transport Research was developed by Workpackage 2 of ENT. Based on an analysis of the demand for trans-national research and the actual running and envisaged national and European research programmes, six areas for cooperation were identified:

  • Economic benefits through integration, interoperability and intermodality
  • Efficiency improvements through transport and infrastructure management
  • Efficiency improvements through intelligent transport systems
  • Economic benefits through pricing and taxation
  • Environmental improvements through vehicle technology
  • Safety and security improvements through transport and infrastructure management.

Furthermore Workpackage 2 developed a foresight report. Based on a Delphi survey, in which over 25 European managing transport researchers participated, the relevant trends relevant for transport (research) policy and following 9 potential themes for future transport research were identified:

  • Pricing and taxation: Harmonisation of ITS standards, Equity and acceptability, Coherence between marginal cost pricing and cost coverage and revenues
  • Infrastructure provision: Minimise impact on people and environment and Use of information in real time
  • Decision support systems: Good practice in modelling, Research on reliability and Establish environmental values
  • Integration of transport systems: Multi-modal freight transport systems and Mobility management
  • Transport and infrastructure management: GPS and Galileo for all transport modes and Advanced IT supported international logistics
  • Vehicle technology: Techniques to reduce noise.

Based on the result of the Road Map and the Foresight study two themes were discussed in Exploratory Workshop, which lead to the identification of more specific and potential topics for trans-national research programming. The outcome of these Workshops is used to start up the Action Groups in the Implementation phase of ENT.

Output of the Workshop on Environmental improvement through vehicle technology

  • Alternative fuel and propulsion system cluster
  • Cleaner car cluster
  • Noise cluster.

Output of the Workshop on Safety and security improvements through transport and infrastructure management

  • Driver support systems with an interface between the driver and the vehicle/ and the vehicle and the road
  • Tracking and Tracing
  • Road user behaviour - the human factor.

In the responsive approach ENT provides service on demand to the partners that are interested to initiate programme coordination and cooperation by themselves. ENT facilitates these actions by identifying possible partners in the participating countries. The following themes and topics were put forward by this responsive approach, which lead to a direct start up of Action Groups in the Implementation phase of ENT.

  • Maritime safety: Survivability of ships
  • Demographic changes and Transport: Elderly in the transport system
  • Road safety: Sleepiness at the wheel and attention disorder
  • Multi-modality: Multi-modal freight transport.
