ENT20: Road Safety
Status
The topic of Road Safety is a common problem in all European countries. The joint funding initiative being developed will target areas where trans-national research cooperation is most valuable. Facts
If you have questions regarding the activity, please contact: Rasmus Gravesen, Tetraplan: rg |
Background
The common vision is to preserve and enhancing road safety in all European countries, while sustaining economic growth and wellbeing. Much progress has been made in improving the road safety. However, the number of people killed and injured on European roads is still unacceptably high. Further research is needed to inform the policies and programmes necessary to further bring down road casualty figures.
To build on potential synergies and to avoid duplication the partner countries agreed to coordinate their research activities within this thematically field. The work will focus on:
- The economics of road accident reduction
- Vulnerable road users
Research themes (under development)
The first joint action the partner organisations will relate to the economics of road accident reduction. A comprehensive exchange of information on relevant national research results and future research requirements and plans will be followed by the development of a programme of clustered research projects, aimed at achieving an agreed common set of objectives.
The specific areas identified for collaboration will, initially, include:
The Economics of Road Accident Reduction:
- Methodologies for valuating indirect costs of road accident casualties
- Forecasting and modelling accident occurrence – at both the aggregate and disaggregate level
- Decision making tools in relation to safety measures.
The second joint action will be focused on vulnerable and elderly road users. This will also be based on comprehensive exchange of information on relevant national research results and future research requirements and plans to be followed by the development of a programme of clustered research projects, aimed at achieving an agreed common set of objectives.
The specific areas identified for collaboration will, initially, include:
Vulnerable Road Users
- Safely maintaining mobility and accessibility for the elderly
- Understanding and quantifying perceived risks for VRUs (this will be linked to the outcome of ENT13 Safety and Security Across Modes)
- Bicycles / motorcycles safety, including investigating the effected distractions (for example mobile phones
- Perception of risks, view of different users, detectability, link with infrastructure.
In the longer term the group will work towards the development of a joint call on motor cycle safety, possibly in autumn 2011.
